Blog Entry 3

Now it's time to complete blog number three. Choose from the topics below. Remember, I am looking for connections between what you see in the field and what you have learned in the course. Please indicate the topic and write two-three paragraphs on the topic.
  • What modifications for learners who are exceptional do you see?
  • What results of laws like IDEA do you see in the school?
  • What strategies does the teacher use to support students who are English learners?

What modifications for learners who are exceptional do you see?

I have been able to do fieldwork in first grade, fourth grade, and a special education classroom.  It is exciting to see the modifications the teachers have made for the students in their classrooms.  Each teacher has been able to implement programs to aid in the education of the exceptional students.
With each of the classrooms, the teachers have placed students in groups for different center learning.  Each of the students are around the same level as the other students in the group for a particular subject.  This gives the teacher a chance to really focus on the groups strengths and weaknesses to teach at a level they can comprehend.  If there is a particular concept that is not understood, the smaller group setting gives the teacher the ability to work more one-on-one with the student, rather than as an entire class.
I have also noticed and enjoyed the way each of the teachers have given me the opportunity to work with a student on a individual basis, to review a concept that they may be struggling with.  The special education teacher has aids who work with her on a daily basis, but I have also been given the opportunity in her class to assist in reinforcing a learned concept.
Each teacher is sensitive and well aware of each and every one of their students and their individual needs.  The amount of patience shown is outstanding.  Some children need more time to complete an assignment, some children need firm boundaries and have them reinforced throughout the day, and others need positive reinforcement to not give up.  I am continually amazed at the talent and love these teachers have for teaching and for the children in their classrooms.
