Resource
Field Experience
I was able to attend for a solid four hours in a resource room. It was nice to see how a classroom functions for a longer period of time, rather than an hour here and there.
The resource teacher was very organized! She had students come in and out every half hour. The students knew the routine and the teacher had all the materials ready and accessible.
When the students would arrive to her room they would get out a small box of index cards with sight words for them to practice while the others arrived. If they were able to read each sight word over a period of four times correctly they could move on to the next group of sight words.
They then moved into group work, either reading or math. I sat in with a small group who were working on vocabulary words with a new book they had started to read. They were eager to learn and enjoyed the one on one setting more than the large classroom.
This particular day, one of the two resource teachers was absent and the district was sending someone to the school to meet with the other resource teacher about a student. I was asked to conduct the lesson with the four students for a short period of time. I was not left alone, the teacher's tech was in the room with another group. I enjoyed this experience and felt pleased they were confident in leaving me to teach the small group.
I look forward to having my own classroom and being able to work with children and teach them. I feel comfortable in this role and feel I will be a great teacher someday!
