Blog Entry 4
Now it is time to
complete blog number four. Choose from the topics below. Remember, I am
looking for connections between what you see in the field and what you
have learned in the course. Please indicate the topic and write
two-three paragraphs on the topic.
- What clerical and preparation responsibilities have you participated in?
- How does this teacher manage assessment?
I have had the opportunity in my field work experience to work with children in groups and one on one, but I have also been given responsibilities to prep homework packets and in class work.
In the first grade class, on a few different occasions, I was asked to comply small early reader books. I spent the time in the teachers work room, where I collated and stapled several different short stories for all of the first grade classrooms. In a fourth grade class I was asked to collated weekly homework packets, separated multiplication facts, and organize upcoming holiday activities. The teachers were very appreciative of my time and efforts.
By completing these assignments for the teachers, it allowed them more time to complete the necessary requirements they have as teachers. I was able to observe different tests and assessments given by the teachers. On one occasion I was in the classroom where a Summative Assessment was done. The class had been working on number placements and the unit was done. The teacher was able to conduct assessments that day because the some of the "busy work" was done and the time was made available to assess the students.
I have found that when a teacher is engaged in the class discussion Implicit Curriculum merely happens; the part of the curriculum that is taught unintentionally. For example, a question was asked about the math lesson, but in order to give a complete answer the teacher had to bring in other subjects to convey an appropriate answer. To me, this is where you can see the difference between a good teacher and a GREAT teacher.
