"Today, the seeds of such a dramatic transformation in education are
being planted. Prompted by massive revolutions in knowledge, information
technology, and public demand for better learning, schools nationwide
are slowly but surely restructuring themselves.
Leading the way are thousands of teachers who are rethinking every
part of their jobs -- their relationship with students, colleagues, and
the community; the tools and techniques they employ; their rights and
responsibilities; the form and content of curriculum; what standards to
set and how to assess whether they are being met; their preparation as
teachers and their ongoing professional development; and the very
structure of the schools in which they work. In short, teachers are
reinventing themselves and their occupation to better serve schools and
students."
A teacher today does not have the same responsibilities as teachers from years ago. The role of a teacher is changing and has become more challenging. Shown below, from Module 5: The Role of a Teacher", is a graphic description of what a teacher is today.
The greatest challenge of a teacher today, is being able to fulfill all the roles required of him/her. More goes into teaching then to just stand up in front of a class and lecture to the students. A teacher, especially on the lower grade levels, does more in educating a child then simply providing the information to learn.
A teacher, on any day, could become a nurse; due to an accident, a judge or referee; due to a disagreement amongst students, or a counselor; due to a emotional day for a student. One of the most important roles a teacher can play in a life of a student is to know and understand each students strengths and weaknesses. To be able to determine if there is a need for additional assistance in a child's learning. This takes time for a teacher and demonstrates how much a teacher cares for his or her students.
